Boyanın içerisinde az miktarlarda
kullanılmalarına rağmen çok önemli parametrelerdendir. Kurutucuların kuruma
olayındaki görevleri reaksiyonları hızlandırmalarıdır. Kurutucular kuruyan ve
yarı kuruyan yağlara ya da bunları yapısında bulduran reçinelere, boyalara ve
verniklere uygulandığında kurumalarını, filmlerinin sertleşmelerini hızlandıran
çoğunlukla metalik yapılardır. Doymamış yağ asitlerinin kuruması oto oksidasyon
ile olur.
Doymamış yağ asitleri havanın oksijeni ile
hidroperoksit ve peroksitler oluşturur. Bunlar da dekompoze olup serbest
radikalleri oluşturur ve bunlar da birbirleriyle reaksiyona girerek üç boyutlu
bir çapraz bağlar oluşturup yüksek moleküllü bir yapı ve kuru film tabakası
oluştururlar.
Kurutucular, 7-18 karbon içeren organik
asitlerin metallerle oluşturduğu ürünlerdir. Birçok metal çeşitli şekillerde
kurumaya yardımcı olması için kullanılır. Aktif kurumayı sağlamak için Co
(kobalt), Mn (mangan) gibi primer kurutucular, diğerleri ise daha az etkili
olan ama primer kurutucularla kullanıldıklarında kuruma ve film özelliğini
arttıran Ca (kalsiyum), Pb (kurşun), Zr (zirkonyum), Zn (çinko)
,St(Stronsiyum)ve Ba(Baryum) metal kurutucularıdır. Kurutucular istenilen
özelliğe göre karışım şeklinde kullanılır.
